Chikankari of Lucknow is the most famous of all crafts in the state. This is a delicate art of embroidery where a fabric is designed by intricate needlework. Chikankari is derived from the Persian word 'chikan' meaning cloth. This craft is available in various patterns of muree, lerchi, keelkangan and bakhia. This is an excellent craft that uses motifs of Mughal architectural themes. You can get saris and salwar suits embroidered with chikan work.

Varanasi Brocade or Varanasi silk is another popular craft of the state. The rich Varanasi brocades created on the fine silk or cotton fabrics use gold or silver threads to create beautiful designs on saris and dress materials. The Benarasi saris play very important role in every Indian marriage as brides are expected to carry a few of them in their wedding attire. The design motifs of these Banarasi saris and suits include intricate floral and foliage patterns and so on.
